Rolls Royce Aero Division Chooses Lightweight Lifting Equipment

The maintenance department of the aero engine factory at Rolls Royce Ansty near Coventry has recently chosen lightweight lifting equipment to assist with numerous lifting tasks around their workshops.

A PORTA-GANTRY system made by Reid Lifting Ltd was recommended by Ryona Engineering of Coventry when they were called in by the maintenance department to assess the lifting applications that Rolls Royce wanted to make.

PORTA-GANTRY fitted the bill, its high tensile alloy frame making it lightweight and manoeuvrable for all the tasks in mind. With no overhead crane facility in the workshops and no room around the back of many of the machines needing maintenance work, PORTA-GANTRY has proved ideal for lifting such things as grinding machine heads, motors, valves and electric coolant pumps. “ We can manoeuvre PORTA-GANTRY in and out of machines and into places where we couldn’t reach normally ” comments John Powell, maintenance supervisor at Rolls Royce Ansty, “ And once a load has been lifted the unit can be moved along the PORTA-GANTRY beam and lowered into position for maintenance.”

With many areas not even accessible with fork trucks, the only solution before PORTA-GANTRY was brought in was to put up an RSJ girder and hang a block and tackle from it and this could take up to a week to arrange. PORTA-GANTRY has thus provided extremely good flexibility and high utilisation of various lifting tasks around the maintenance department, “PORTA-GANTRY has without doubt improved our efficiency” adds John Powell of Rolls Royce Ansty.
